Deep Winter at Alyeska

The legends of yore tell stories of immense storms, caked slopes, and everlasting powder turns. If you spend any time in a ski town, you’ll eventually encounter a local who will regale with almost unbelievable accounts. 1,000″ winters, road closures, avalanches, buried homes & rowdy plow drivers are speckled throughout these wild, tall tales.

I’ve always been somewhat skeptical, but when you encounter a winter like this year’s, filled with stuck trucks, towering snowbanks, & day after day of powder skiing, you start to become a believer.

I remember the first time I watched a local ski from the chairlift all the way back to their house. Darting & zipping across side streets, over snow banks, making effortless turns all the way to their front porch. It was surreal. Surely, this is what those legendary winters were like.

This time of year, we start thinking of what’s to come. Long days in the sunshine, corn skiing, and that beautiful alpenglow that seems to last forever. Even though we are diving into Alaska’s Spring Break, this winter is not showing any signs of giving up. Today started at a cool 15 degrees F, and with over 12 hours of daylight, it may look like Spring out there, but the snow continues to ski like deep winter.

With more sunshine & cold, dry, powder on the way this weekend, we can’t wait to see what this next storm cycle provides?
